Getting familiarized with the basic function of the reflectance channel.

The Reflectance channel in Cinema 4D combines reflection and specular properties to define how light and the environment interact with the material. In this video, you’ll be introduced to the inner workings of the Reflectance channel. You’ll learn about the Reflection Strength & Specular Strength. You learn how Attenuation and Layer Mask control how each Reflectance layer interacts with other layers and with the Color channel. This theoretical introduction lays a groundwork for more specific instruction that follows.

- In this video, you'll learn about the basic properties of the reflectance channel, and how it is calculated by Cinema 4D. A simple material can be broken down into three components: the diffuse, the specular, and the reflection. In Cinema 4D, the diffuse is handled by the color channel, but when dealing with specular highlights and reflections, you're dealing with the reflection of light in a scene. This is done either as a fake, in the case of a specular, or something more physically accurate, as is the case with reflections. Because both of these effects deal with reflection, they're combined into a single channel, the reflectance channel. Inside the reflectance channel, there are many different types of shading models that can be used. These shading models determine the algorithm used to calculate the specular and reflective properties of a material. Each layer within the reflectance channel can represent one of these shading models, which can be stacked together for complex effects. For the sake of simplicity, we're going to start by taking a look at how a single shading model is handled within the reflectance channel. In this case, Beckman will be used. When looking at the various attributes in a single reflection layer, there are a few key attributes that you need to know. Generally, these will also be shared by each of the various shading models. These key attributes are the reflection and specular strengths, the attenuation type, and the layer mask amount. This brings us to the first important set of attributes, which are the sliders for the reflection strength and specular strength. Most of the shading models that can be added to the reflectance channel are actually composed of two separate layers: a reflection layer and a specular layer. The reflection strength and specular strength sliders then control the contribution of each of these layers to the final reflectance for the main layer. The contribution of these two layers is represented as a value between 100% or full contribution, to 0% or no contribution, which is black. The contribution from these two layers is then added together to get the final reflectance for the channel. This is just like using the add blend model in Photoshop or After Effects. Once the reflectance has been calculated the result is then blended with the color channel. The way in which the reflectance is blended with the color channel is determined based on the selected attenuation method. For most of the shading models, there are several different attenuation types to choose from, but the main two that you will need to know are average and additive. When using average attenuation, the reflectance layer is blended over top of the color channel. This is similar to using a normal blend mode in Photoshop or After Effects and adjusting the opacity. This means that as the reflectance layer is mixed with the diffuse, it will override the diffused color. If the reflectance strength is then lowered to zero, all that will be seen is the specular contribution. As the specular strength is lowered to zero, all that will be seen is black rather than the diffused color. Again, this is because the color channel will be overwritten with the exact results of the reflectance for that layer. When using additive attenuation, the reflectance layer is added to the color channel. Again, this is just like the add blend model found in Photoshop or After Effects. This means that as the reflectance layer is mixed with the diffuse, it will be added to the diffuse color, and the underlying color will still be visible. If the reflection strength is lowered to zero, a combination of the specular and diffuse will be seen. As the specular strength is lowered to zero, then the diffuse color is visible again, as adding black to anything will result in no change. The final key attribute for the reflectance layer is the layer mask amount. The layer mask is essentially an alpha mask for the reflectance layer. The layer mask amount is then used to control the opacity of the reflectance, and it is perfect for controlling the brightness of the reflectance when using any of the attenuation methods. The next important element of the reflectance channel is the ability to stack individual reflectance layers together. When working with multiple reflectance layers, all of the previous information still applies to each individual layer, including how that individual layer is blended with the color channel. But now, the way in which each reflectance layer in the channel is blended together must be considered. This is controlled by a drop down, which can be found next to each reflectance layer in the layers tab of the reflectance channel, and allows for either normal blending or additive blending of each reflectance layer. In this example, two layers, which are both using average attenuation will be blended together using the normal mode. The top reflectance layer has no roughness, and the underlying layer has significant roughness. When using normal mode to blend the reflectance layers together, the top-most layer will overwrite the underlying layers based on the layer mask amount. As the layer mask amount of the top layer is reduced, the rough reflectance layer below becomes available. As the layer mask for the bottom layer is reduced, the diffuse will become visible. To have both layers and the diffuse visible at the same time, both layers need to be transparent to a certain amount. When setting the blend mode for the top layer to add, the result of the top layer is added on top of the layer below. It should be noted that this significantly increases the brightness of the final reflection, as values can now exceed 100% brightness. If the lower layer is set to add, the result will not change and the color channel is still not visible. Since the lower layer is still using average attenuation, the layer mask amount needs to be changed to allow some of the color channel to show through. In another example, the attenuation of the top layer is set to additive, and the layer below is set to average. In this case, the color channel will be blended with the top layer, but the reflectance layer below the top layer is still completely overwritten. Again, this is because the attenuation controls blending between an individual reflectance layer and the color channel, but not between multiple reflectance layers. To get blending between the two reflectance layers, the layer mask amount for the top layer still has to be lowered, allowing for a mix between the top reflectance layer and the bottom. The other option in this case is to set the blend mode for the top reflectance layer to add. With this basic knowledge of how the attenuation, reflection, and specular strengths, layer mask and blend modes work together, you are ready to start building your own complex reflections.
