Modeling and Texturing a Wave Spilling from a Painting

Good evening, Doc -

I’m not an experienced modeler and I’m attempting to model and texture a wave spilling out of a painting.  I’ve attached a JPEG example showing the general look I’m seeking.  This is a still-image project.

I’m wondering if you’d be willing to guide me toward what is the best way to model the wave (and possibly the ocean that is seen behind the wave)?  Would the wave and ocean need to be separate models or could they be one?  What C4D tools are best for creating the wave as it spills out of the painting?  I will want one version where the wave is just beginning to spill and one where it is spilling onto the floor below the painting.

Doc, I’m hoping to have an actual wave pushing forth from the painting in the initial scene, then have just water pouring from the painting in the second scene.  The attached JPEG only shows the water pouring forth, but not in the form of a wave.

In a perfect world, I’d like to be able to shade most of the wave with a nice water material, but shade the tips of the wave with a foam material.  Not sure how to do this.

I’m open to any advice that you are willing to share.

Thank you!

Hi Mark,

Let’s start with the spill out of the frame. I would just set up some particles and with the help of a MoGraph Tracer, place this into the Volume Object.
Please have a look here:

The second file holds a wave-plane. This was created with a plugin called HOT4D. Perhaps you have a look into it as well.
The mesh that the HOT4D will use can have all kind of shapes. Even the Correction Deformer treated with a Magnet Tool could work in a Volume Object. In that way, you can shape the way it moves out of the frame, and then have waves on top of that. It could go all in one Volume eventually and would be smoothed that way.

Let me know if there is anything else, I’m happy to look into it.

Cheers

Thanks, Doc.  I’ll investigate these ideas in depth tomorrow morning, but just took a brief peek.

I looked into the Hot4D plugin earlier today and saw some comments that it doesn’t work in R20.  Have you had any experience with it in R20?  I’m wondering if it works.

I’ve never used the Correction deformer before, nor the Magnet tool.  Do you know if there is a tutorial available on these tools?

With the MG Tracer approach, the streams of water are farther apart/more independent than I’d like.  Is there a way to push them closer together so that the spilling wave looks more like a single object with lots of ridges?

Thank you for your help!

Mark,

All the results from the Particles can be changed, as can the Tracer be adjusted in some areas. The Volume has filters and adjustments. The Magnet Tool and the Correction Deformer are relatively simple to use as well. Just start with an empty scene and explore them in a small set up. The Correction Deformer was used here, to be able to go back at any time. The Magnet Tool works directly on a polygon mesh.

To have more streams, dial in a higher number of particles. Use the Volume Smoother, etc. I’m confident when you dive into the files and allow for some “play-time” it will become all clear.

I have recorded three parts in the screen capture below: (all R20)

But yes, if you take the time to learn all the tools, you might have no obstacles to adjust all of that.

I hope this will give you a good start with those tools.

My best wishes
