Rounding Corners

Hello Sassi,

I have been trying to round the outer and inner corners of the object in the scene file below. Please can you advise how to model so that I don’t get those points sticking out on the outside (the pointed poly that’s sticking out) and avoid the hollow rounded corner on the inside, so it is filled in. I have been trying but I am stuck now.

Thank you,
David

Hi David,

You made a Tube editable and the typical result is, that the Caps are not connected, except you have enabled fillets. In the moment you have your polygon object selected, with either all points or none selected, press U then O [U~O] or use the Main Menu> Mesh> Commands> Optimize function get this done. (There is a cogwheel in the menu, please explore that wink

Ok, I see now. I did actually use the Optimize command (via shortcut) to merge the points but it had no effect. Now I see the option in the Menu cogwheel “Points”

Thanks for showing the other methods and I notice that in the scene with using the Connect with the Bevel in a Null, this shows me a behaviour I have not seen before i.e. that when the Bevel is placed in a Null object with no parent object. Initially I thought how this could affect the object. But by placing all under the Null, the single Bevel is applied to the other object in the Null, regardless of where the Bevel is in the hierarchy. Is that correct?

Many thanks,
David

You’re very welcome, David.

The optimize, if not changed, should have as default the Points checked. Anyway, if only a few points are selected, then only those get the treatment. Hence any other points stay in the way they are.

The hint with the cogwheel was mainly based on the distance (Tolerance). If that value is larger than neighbor points are apart (who should not be merged), then one can create a problem. So, have an eye on this.

Thanks for taking the time to check this out!

The one in the Null, if we talk about the same, then please check the Bevel Deformer: Use Angle. If it is the other file, not the one with the Null, then I used the selection you had provided.

ENJOY

Please let me clarify. When I have previously played with the Bevel Deformer it is typically placed as a child under an object e.g. cube, then the edges of the cube are bevelled. But in the second scene the Bevel Deformer and the original object are both children of a Null, and Bevel Deformer is not the child of the object, it is just on its own in the hierarchy. So my understanding is that the Null is applying the Bevel Deformer to the object, as both are under the same Null object. If this is the case, I didn’t know that Nulls had this effect in this instance - Thanks, David

David,

In some cases one can’t use a deformer as child under an object. Here the Connection has both options, it has a field to drag the object inside (It has so not to be a child, and allows so to use a deformer), and then the Deformer can be used as child. However, it is not that obvious (see image), and so I avoid it here for the forum.

Any deformer can be used as “sibling”, the downside is that some functionality is not given: E.g., Fit To Parent. A sibling is not a parent. Some deformers, as far as I see it, work more consistently as child, e.g., if they need to be initialized.

Could I clear it? IF not, set up a spline, use it with an Extrude Object, and try to deform it, it will cause trouble, it needs to be a sibling. Siblings are created by installing a parent: The NULL!

All the best
