Trying to learn the new volume feature using this tut> New in Cinema 4D R20: Create Complex Organic Models from Simple Shapes with Volume Modeling

So, the Subtract and Intersect settings are not responding properly. Those setting just seem to break it from the builder completely.

I removed the Intersect cube because it was hiding the model completely, but that has shown me different results on different tries.

Also, the Volume Mesher is not creating the object. Still getting a black screen render.

See screen grab. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

Hi markfug,

A scene file is the way to communicate. Pretty much always.

Anyway, since you have made the spheres not a child to the Volume set up, they stay visible. Check the two dots to red in object manager (Visibility editor/render) and have a look again.

All the best

If you could go to the video: https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/c4d_r20_create_complex_organic_models_from_simple_shapes_volume_modeling

He saying at 00:20 to drag to the objects list “OR” making them a child of the Volume Builder. I intially tried making a child, but it wasn’t giving me correct results either. Either way, they both seem to add to the object list, but it seems that just dragging it into the object list seems to give awkward results. So why is saying you can drag to the objects list?

So, I’ve know made it a child, and the modes are working now. It still won’t render.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the file.

Yes, as I mentioned, both work, but if you just drag them inside the list, the source objects (spheres and cubes) stay visible and you might not see the full result of the Volume.

Here is you file back:

I’ve opened your file. It’s still rendering black unless I add a light to the scene. Is that case with you? I tried creating a new scene, and I didn’t need to add a light for it to render.

OK, I render it and it is black, same here, markfug.

Checking the rendering settings, while having the Options> Default Light [sic] under suspicion: I see that the file has Global Illumination enabled.

Switch this off and the file I have send you will work fine.

Cheers

Ah, ha. Yes. That was one of the things I turned on early to try rendering before learning the Volume Mesher part. I forgot that going through my troubleshooting. Sorry.

One more question if you please. The tutorial didn’t go into your recommendation on turning off the visibility of objects. Nothing is shown turned off except deformers. Why do I need to turn of visibility of objects, and is that something required in all cases? Thanks for your help.

Hi markflug,

Please check the content of the video again, he drags it under the Volume Builder.

I have one favor to ask, if you have a question about a tutorial, use the Help button under the video. In this forum (Tutorial) no one should open a new thread, as this breaks the connection (or doesn’t enable one to be precise) and with your own head line on top of that, people will be not able to find things about it and ask again - instead of finding perhaps an already given answer. thanks.

I have changed the head line, but anything elseā€¦

All the best
