Turn any Object into Hexagons with Instant Meshes

Hello, I am trying to do this hexagon mesh on a vault (ceiling). I have downloaded the instant mesh program. I subdivided my object.
My first problem is how to choose all the the faces and all the edges. Thanks. Valentina (C4D R19 Prime)

Hi tinanvale,

Can you attach the ceiling object in a scene file and share it here. If you have a problem to attach a file here (it happens from time to time, I will set up an upload link.

If the ceiling is just a flat object, you could use the Polygon object, set it to triangle if 100 cm in width is fine, then the height should be set to 86.6025cm. Then set up the subdivisions until the density looks fine.

Based on the needs of your ceiling shape, delete all unwanted triangles and then proceed as in the tutorial.

I will check your file of course.

Cheers

Hello, my answer was which is the command to select all the faces? or all the edges? Now I found out: click on one face, then Select->Select all. Is there a shortcut key? Thanks again.

Hi tinanvale,

It wasn’t clear to me why you couldn’t select, so typically I ask for a scene file. Since that is one of the main parts of the tutorial, I assumed that somewhere else must the problem.

You mentioned the Instant Mesh program, which focused my attention to the problem in a different direction (my fault, but I’m used to interpret anything as the source of a problem, until we find the real source), hence my suggestion to use perhaps a polygon object, to avoid extra work, or an extra source to be the problem. Problem-solving strategy: exclusion.

Typically, you select the object in question. Then the mode, what you like to select, e.g., Edge Mode, is chosen. It should then work with a “cmd/ctrl + a”. [select all]

You will find that command as well as in Main Menu> Edit> Select all. Make certain that the “mouse” is inside the specific window. If the mouse indicator is outside, that area will be considered as target to be selected.

Please let me know if there is any other question.

All the best

Great I did it. Now I have another question: is it possible to change the dimensions of the hexagons? And is there a way to deform the hexagons, stretch them? Thanks again

Hi tinanvale,

Here is a file with three options, and it is certainly not a complete presentation:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/EoQSeYkwkYc7etfOfjV5AF63b2LBs9dxOjayOhJdOML

Which one would come closest? (Press play)

If you could tell me more about of what you would like to do – I could give a more price reply, perhaps a sketch?

My best wishes

I saw your example. I’m attaching now what I did. There is also the hexagon right dimension: is a stretch like hexagon shape. I would have the hexagon-mesh curved along my vault. I know it’s a bit complex, now I drew all the hexagons one by one, side by side. Best regards

We are moving away from a tutorial question, perhaps time to split this thread.

Here is a scene file, tinanvale.

Please have a look how far this follows your needs. I marked the animated parts in yellow.

Edit: Sorry, I just remembered, it was a C4D Prime question. Give me a moment.

I used the Tools> Arrange Objects> Duplicate command here. …and again, and again. “Connect Objects and Delete”, as well as “Optimize”.
Here is quick sketch of that process:

Thanks, what a great stuff.
I’ll have a look, trying to understand and create my stretched hexagons copies, then bend them along my precise vault angle.
Best regards

You’re very welcome, tinanvale, thanks for the nice feedback.

Please feel free to download the clip above, so you can view it in a better way.
Let me know if there is a question, I’m happy to look into it.

Cheers

Hi Craig,

Thanks, I’m fine, I hope you are doing fine as well.

Of course, I have used it, and since everything might change, I checked it again: It continues to work here on Mac.

Look for the MacOSX version.

Scroll down to “Pre-compiled binaries”
