I’d like to render quicktime movies out of Cinema4d running on Windows 7 (yes - I know image sequences are much better)

Does Apple actually make you purchase Quicktime Pro to get that functionality in your render settings? I see only options for 3GP, ASF, AVI, MP4 and WMV in the format field.

Cheers

Hi AK,

What do you mis in the new Media Core?
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/new_in_cinema_4d_r19_media_core_mp4_animated_gif

I’m not familiar with the combination “Windows7, Quicktime, and “which version of C4D?”.

The Pro version was only available for the v7 not for the X version to my knowledge.

If the QuickTip clip above is not helping, please contact the support.

Thanks Dr. Sassi

new Media core stuff looks great. R19 cannot output quicktime movies so I will do a little research and see what lossless codec’d movies I can get out of AVI format.

Cheers

Hi AK,

QuickTime is just a container for many formats. If not an Apple format, like ProRes, then it follows mostly the specification of the industry standards.

As you mentioned, sequences are preferable for many reasons, and since we are already in the age of REC 2020 / REC 2100 etc, one of the best output formats is OpenEXR and then go from there. It is one of the formats that can contain from the start what C4D calculates internally. With larger color spaces and more dynamic are used these days, anything below will look dull and limited very soon.

Anyway, have you checked with the support?  What I got last night researching this, was that QT for WIn7 was available. Have you checked with the Apple Support about this?

All the best

Im in agreement with all of this - yet when I have a lot of multipass composities to deal with in After Effects I’m not a big fan of the Extractor plugin to deal with EXR files (an honestly, Adobe is pretty terrible about keeping After Effects on the forefront of file formats). Best quality is all relative depending on the job and delivery and in some instances I find it easiest to use good old animation codec movies which allows for fast and clear navigation in the finder, or the sequence window of your compositing app. Personally I find it easier to keep track of file naming this way etc etc, but its all just my personal preference. If I was doing a couple of commercial or film composities then yes, more passes, lets fill up that EXR file, but for a lot of composites that aren’t hyper dependent on bit depth or color then I think good old movie files are an invaluable “simpler” format.

Also I wrote Maxon and they confirmed that R19 does not output quicktime movie files.

Cheers

Hi AK,

I have the feeling you know all of that very well, however – as I write in a forum, I have to be a little bit more sharing and detailed. Having said that:

With the “.aec” file, one doesn’t even have to deal with all the single sequences. It just loads them in with a click or two.

Yes, I wish Adobe would use OpenEXR multilayer files like NUKE does.

Not to argue here, but many parts of the Multi-Pass system need floating point. I found it always rather weird to clean up QUICK Time Multi-Pass files for Ae use, e.g. when “alpha channels”  (Buffers, data results, etc.) are delivered in the RGB channels and set up as gamma-based for example.

Again, since I have no experience with Win7 and what QT is available for it, please check with the support.

Fingers crossed that you get your wanted set up working.

My best wishes

Better file handling of EXR files would be a game changer in After Effects.

I’m sure the AVI file format should do the trick. Working with computers is about embracing the new.

Im also an old Softimage guy and I’ve been pretty spoiled by what I considered the hands down best output system in any 3D software ever. Growing pains as I get acquainted with Cinema’s output settings and takes system. (Why no Object ID pass yet in 2018?!)

Cheers

I hope, AK, you get it running with the set up you like.

Cheers.

As a rant to cap this thread off: Had I known that Maxon was removing the quicktime movie output capability from R19 and onward I would likely not have bought the software. If you’re on Windows you need a lossless movie format that supports embedded alpha channel information. Image sequences are great but for a lot of mid range work you don’t require them. For the price of this software the render pass / output module should not feel like they’re from a program from the 1990’s. It’s my hope that Maxon really puts some work in to offer a better set of options and functionality for Windows users.

Hi AK,

Thanks for your input. Is this based on your support inquiry? Not a good situation, and I’m sorry about that. Again, I have no Windows based system here, so I can’t check anything.
Your rant, completely understood!

However, I would like you to ask the following, to send what you need directly to MAXON:
https://www.maxon.net/en-us/support/suggestions/

I hope that anyone with the same needs will do so as well.
Fingers crossed that a lossless and alpha-based option will be given ASAP.

If you are at NAB, please stop by and talk with the people at the booth.

My best wishes.
