Fade Texture at Edges

So I’ve got a ground texture that I am using for grass around a house model. I want to fade the grass texture around the edges. I have done it by dropping a gradient texture into the opacity channel. (I am actually using Corona Renderer, but it should be a similar process). I can get the fade where I want my scaling the texture up and down and adjusting the gradient. However, I need to actually scale the grass down without scaling where the gradient is. I don’t want each blade of grass being huge haha. Someone online suggested changing my mapping to camera, which I have done, but still cannot get the desired effect. Here are a couple images of my process:

Thanks!

Hi Matt,

The simplest way, and I think the most intuitive, is given by just layering several Texture Tags.

The idea is simple, the most right sided Tag adds the information to the next on the left by using the Texture Tag>>Attribute Manager> Tag> “Mix Texture” check box.
The Material that holds the mask or alfa is set to black, but this one is not to set to mix texture. However, based on the alfa channel, the one to the right can mix only where the mask/alfa based is. In that way, while in texture Mode, you can move and scale each independently.

The example is based on the texture mode Flat, I will work in the same way with other projection methods.

Thanks so much Dr. Sassi! This is close to what I was trying to get, but is there a way to hide the larger texture? (the one in my screenshot circled in pink)

Matt, what kind of texture do you want to have there? The larger texture is the most left sided Texture Tag in this case. IF you replace it with a new material, this material will show.

Please let me know if that works for you.

Cheers

I was hoping to just have the background texture show through it. Maybe what I’m trying to do just isn’t possible I suppose. Not a big deal really. I’m just kind of messing around anyhow smile

Thanks again for your help sir!

Matt, what is the Background Texture? The “naked” surface of the object?

I not really clear about your target, so I might point into the wrong direction now. If all has to be in one material, you might want to look into the Layer shader, as well into the Fusion shader, but certainly into the Effects> Projection Shader.

My target with the split of materials was mainly to allow for an easy adjustment.

My personal way of doing would be, if camera mapping was the key, to render the view of the Camera in wire-frame/lines mode (software render) and then paint the mask for the alfa channel in Photoshop. There are many ways to get this information, but that would be the one for now. Compositing Tag>Tag>Matte object:set color would be another.

All the best

I think I may have figured it out. I have attached a scene file. Thanks a ton for your help though, I sincerely appreciate it!!

Hi Matt,

This is just one texture, have a look at the file, you don’t need two Texture Tags or Two Materials. I understood the Grass was a texture. The Gradient (3D) can be adjusted and moved independently.

I do not have Corona, so if that is the missing part of the information.

Good luck with the project

Matt, that happens when I don’t ask from the start what is really wanted. I call this the half way request, it fails most of the time, or lead to a long thread. In other words, if start from what is “solved so far”, and the camera mapping and the extra information indicated that you are familiar with it, then I take all the de-tours already taken and add to it.  I took it from there: My fault; I know it better. Always, always, always start from the beginning. And get a scene file. I should be more stubborn with that wink

Anyway, here is a little idea, just move the green Null, even up an down will work.
Click on the Null>attribute Manager>User Data.

Think of a alfa sphere that you move and adjust.

… and one more, where the Null “sphere” size is indicating the gradient size. Texture is set to world.
