Issues with Depth-of-Field using ‘Frontal Projection’

Hello,

I’m experiencing issues with with DOF, where the model is blurring correctly, but the material is not. (see attached screen grabs for reference).

I have pin pointed the issue. It is to do with using ‘Frontal Projection’ in the material settings. You will see when I change this to ‘Spatial’ (or any other setting other than frontal), the DOF effect works beautifully. However, no other projection method gives me the arrangement of polka dots I’m after.

Now, you’re probably asking why I’m using frontal projection at all – and not UV mapping the texture. Simple answer really, I’ve only been using C4D for a short time and at this stage – UV mapping is too advance for the time I have left on this project.

Is there anyway I can get the dots to drop out of focus but still use frontal projection?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Drew

Hi Drew,

I can recreate your problem. There is a solution, and it has a tiny bit to do with UV[W]. However, it is done with a simple few clicks. To make this less stressful, please create a copy of your scene, so you feel comfortable.

Please check the attached clip below. I prepared and check the scene 00-30 sec. Then between 31sec and 50 sec you will find the steps needed to get this done. As long as we talk about polygon objects.

One minute clip:

Download it if you like.

The initial deleting of the UV tag is not the only way, but for simplicity I do this here. Next: Your scene is set up as you like with a Frontal Projection. While all polygons are selected, we just generate new UV[W] information. Now the projection looks the same, but as UV[W]. This places the former Frontal Projection onto the object. A camera move is possible, but the “dots” will stick now to the tree from now on and render with DOF related blur.

Here is the scene file, check the rendering and in the file the dots are round, as the texture represents the render format. (In the one minute clip I had it in 1:2.4 format instead of a 16:9, hence there is a squeeze. Since it stays very much the same Frontal to UVW, that wasn’t a problem for the demo.

If you get not the results that are shown in the clip or the file with your scene: Please let me know, I will give you an upload link and set it up for you in the file you send.
Just let me know.

All the best

Dr. Sassi, you are my new best friend. Thanks so much – it worked perfectly! Have a look here: https://ibb.co/iiuN75

It was my first time using this forum. It’s now my new go-to for C4D. Legend.

Thanks for the visual feedback, Drew. Looks good.

I’m glad it worked for you.

Never hesitate to ask here!

Cheers.

P.S.: different and perhaps a nice alternative is to set up a camera mapping. It always might depend on the need of the project.
