Hi,

I’am facing a problem with the snap, I have attached a screen capture of the snap function from 3ds max. Is it possible to ‘enable snap constraint’ while snapping like in 3ds max? Is there a work around in C4D?

For some reason I couldnt attach a gif. Please use this link to view the example.

PS: I’am in the process of switching from 3ds max to C4D:)

Thanks.

Hi prashanth2511,

Please have a look here:

https://help.maxon.net/us/#DMODELING-SNAP_SETTINGS

Scroll down to example #3

If you have a Polygon selected, while holding down the Shift key, click on the Point Mode icon to convert the selection to point. After your adjustment, the polygon selection will be available by just clicking on the Polygon Mode icon.

You will find below a link with an one minute clip, demoing the example #3

Hi,

Thank you so much for the help. I’am getting used to this method of snapping. This is only thing I miss coming from 3ds max, right now! Do you think this plugin ‘Parametric Toolkit’ will help me do this better than the native C4D one?

http://www.rodenburg-verlag.de/shop/cinema-4d-plugins/parametric-toolkit/

Thanks,
Prashanth

You’re welcome, Prashanth.

I haven’t tested this plug-in (I love to stay native as long as possible, which pushes me to create my own stuff). So, I can go only from my assumption that it is from Arndt von Königsmarck, hence Rodenburg Verlag. If so: He has delivered over [around] two decades good solutions and certainly great support. If you see an advantage in it and if the price point is cool with you, perhaps give it a go.
However, explore as well the Attribute Manager> “Modeling Axis” while in scale, rotation or in the move tool.

Have a great day!

You can do this easily with the axis extension feature https://help.maxon.net/us/#TOOLMOVE . Enable polygon and vertex snapping, with the polygon that you want to move selected ctrl/right click on the axis component that is pointing in the direction you want to move in, ie z-axis, and you will see that only the head of the axis will move when dragging, you can release the mouse button now while dragging, snap this to the polygon you are moving then left click and drag over to the vertex you want to snap to. You will see that this works exactly as you showed in your first post. Do a search for c4d axis extension and you will find some example videos. This feature works in object and all edge/poly/vertex modes.

Hi JD,

Well, very close. Thanks for your efforts.

Please have a look at post #1, where I demoed for Prashanth what he asked for, and check the link about snap setting.

All the best

Hi Dr. Sassi, thanks, yes I’m also aware of this method but I just thought I would show this alternative one just to show some options. No disrespect intended.

Cheers

Thanks again, JD,

Any tip that is related is welcome of course.

For just moving a polygon and leave anything else untouched, you have good results with the Toolmove, while the snapping point is not along the selection axis. Maybe I miss something, but in the moment I move the axis to the Polygon center to pick up that point, I have problems to move the Polygon along the axis previously chosen, and then catch a point in distance to that axis. With the demoed above, I don’t have that hazzle. I use a tablet with a pen set for the RMC.

If it works for you, great! Again, I might miss something. I don’t get always the results as with the snapping method discussed in the help menu, I guess the flipping axis arrow (when the axis is very close to the polygon) throws me off.

My best wishes

Thank you Mr. JD and Dr. Sassi. JD’s method works very well for me. It helps me model faster. Once again thank you for this wonderful community. I wouldn’t go anywhere forward without you people.
