Ideas on how to make this yarn or thread

I have been trying to wrap my brain around this idea of a spot I saw on vimeo. I will attach a jpg. I am basically trying to make a yarn or thread like this. I don’t have xparticles. I do have thinking particles. Not even sure if this is the way to go about it. would you possibly use a sphere with tracer and have the hair wrap it? Anyone accomplish anything like this that could give me a helping hand in the right direction? I would really appreciate it!

Hi Kotten_3,

Have a look here:

https://www.cineversity.com/forums/viewthread/1981/

Or did you look for this:

https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/CsR80HGL5s1FlLMOZ45atX8AQgbii0Ttm7yO5BRWY9a?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

Perhaps more the yarn material?

All the best

P.S.: Here are some little ideas, all packed into one file.

File

This file creates the yarn “texture” with SubPolygon Displacement, it takes while to render, hence the extra file

… with Grass

This is more a sketch. I would think that a twisted yarn structure, for the single yarn, perhaps in a Normal Map might make the difference.

The idea here is mainly based on the shaders “ChanLum” and “Subsurface Scattering” or “Backlight”. In the file - not in the screenshot, the “Grass” shader, for the fine detail “hair” of the yarn, to catch some more details with the light.

You might dive in deeper, and it seems that it is mostly the light that “makes it or breaks it”

I hope that gives a good “jump start” to your exploration, as requested.

All the best

Wow you went above and beyond! I didn’t even think about grass as extra texture. Well before you answered I was playing with the hair idea. I love the stuff you did, but the render time will absolutely kill me! Here is an idea I was working up. Let me know what you think, and if there is a way to get it closer to what you sent. this renders quick because of hair. the problem is, is that it doesn’t tighten up more as the yarn gets further down the screen.

Thanks for the file, Kotten_3.

If I get your target correctly, just animate the size of the Sphere to gain the desired.

Currently the Hair material is set in a way that it is tighter on the “roots” then on the tips.

Perhaps test out “Sketch ‘n’ Toons”, as it has the options to set parameters based on many parameters.
Screenshot, Thickness:

With those options in mind, one could use a Gradient set to 3D, and the starting point would be then the camera. The radius would be then in need to fit the desired distance. In this way you can fine-tune the Thickness (as well as other channels in the Hair material) in any way you like.

It doesn’t show the camera view, but the camera in relation to the spline/hair combination. Switch to camera to get a final view to this.

Please always the core problem in the file, not all the extra stuff, thank you.
BTW, to share 3rd party products in your file public-ally is perhaps not a good idea.

All the best

P.S.: yes long renders, but not bad for a quick sketch:

Okay so I have taken your excellent ideas and added to mine. I loved the little grass fur on the strands and realized you couldn’t add them to hair. So I made those a sweep instead with the little fur. then I used a helix for the extra strand and made that a hair object. I’m still running into the same issue with ctrl render being perfect and then the render viewer is wrong. I wish there was a better way then having to export and reimport everything. I am uploading my project for anyone that has been having trouble or needing something similar. I can use your other methods for the far away shots, but this should get me the up-close detail shots.

You’re very welcome, Kotten_3.

The Render issue was discussed in another thread, so we do not want to mix that up wink

Please have a look here:

It is easily fixable!
