Hi Craig,
Which is the most efficient to use, well, it depends on your scene. Sorry, there is no general answer to that AFAIK. Some options are even not available to all.
One could aim at fps refresh rate and someone else how fast a preview proxy renders, perhaps equal in ratio, perhaps not at all. There are too many variables.
The Display Level Of Detail works only with primitives or generated objects (Sweep, Lathe, etc), not with polygon based object. Have a look at Editor View> Options>Level of detail.
The cube from the Cube.c4d file is only referenced in the XRef.
Yes, the bake or better “cache” option will always help. Please note that the object was here a cube, but it should match the “silhouette”/shape if used for example with dynamic based scenes.
Alternative to this would be the Detail Tag again, but here set to Style: Box.
If the hi-res object is in many “set ups”, sometimes the use of Instances can help. The original is placed under a Null made Invisible edit/render, and the instance looks only to the object. So one can easily exchange that.
So, in the next file on the left, the selection object re-selects all the Instances and an easy swap out the object can be done.
The second (middle) set up uses the Box option, very fast.
The right sided uses XPresso to switch. Click one time on the XPresso tag and go to the Attribute Manager>User Data.
Besides that, the option to create informations in the view port certainly have changed over the years. based on your CPU the amount of data is highly dependent on the power of those cards. But also here, everything has a limit. The more data needs to be “digested” to be visible, the more work needs to be done. In some cases, this will slow down things.
To work efficiently in segment and polygon amount goes without saying. To sort things on layers and switch part off while not needed is certainly a good idea.
Perhaps to keep four windows open when you really only work in two might help as well.
All the best
