Xref and Cameras

I’m trying to Xref in a master project that includes objects, textures, lights, sky, and cameras. However when I render the referenced project I loose the alpha channel. It doesn’t seem to matter if I am rendering through one of the referenced cameras or not.

The alpha channel reappears if I reference only the objects, lighting, sky and textures.

Please help me understand what’s happening here. We’re very new to C4D and I am point man on fitting it into our pipeline.

Hi D_Smith,

Please have a look at this scene the …XRho_01.c4d (ho for host)

I ge an alpha channel with default or with the referenced camera. I can add a sky object in both scenes as well, no change of the alpha.

I can set up an upload link if you like, so I can explore your set up.

All the best

Hey Doc. Sorry for the delayed response. I figured it out though; I was missing a checkbox.

I told you I was a noob.

Thank’s for the quick response.

It wasn’t until the 6th time I double checked my render settings that I clicked on the Save tab and discovered the button. I must have found it before but that was probably 3 months age.

but pics are better.

Thanks for the extra work.

This isn’t excluding or separating the XRef parts. It works for the whole scene.

Your initial question shows that the XRef parts flip the outcome.

Do you have the scenes anymore?

All the best

THe Xref was innocent, it was me the whole time.

When I made a test case I developed it within the original protect file (I deleted the objects/cameras/etc and then referenced them back in). This means I kept the original render settings and everything worked.

Then when I deployed it I created a new project file, added the Xref, and defined my render settings EXCEPT for the alpha channel checkbox. So I didn’t render an alpha channel and assumed it must be involved with the Xref since that was the new thing and alpha had been working fine before I tried to get fancy with our projects.

Classic human error!

I am really pleased with C4D. In 3 months worth of “spare time” I was able to entirely phase out Maya from the pipeline here. This hiccup and mapping UVs were the only thing that’s given me problems.

Thank you so much for letting me part of this process, D_Smith.

I learn every day as well (since more than two decades), and certainly by studying the question here - how the problem came to work against the artist in the first place.

In this way, I really appreciate the time you took to reply. “There are no errors—only gained experience.” :o)

Nice that you enjoy your progress and if there is anything else, please do not hesitate to ask.

Have a nice weekend.
