Adding more joints & controllers to the character tool rigs

Hey all,

More specific to the title, I’m looking to add a tongue to the quadruped rig via the character tool. Is there a best practice for this?

I’ve included a screenshot of what the object tab looks like. Here’s some context:
• The character tool is skinned to the Cat mesh
• The tongue joints are parent constrained to their respected controllers and is bound to the cat_tongue mesh

Now, my thought process (to no avail) was to parent constrain the tongue_con_base to the jaw controller but that pops the tongue out of place. All of the coords are frozen and zeroed out. Appreciate any thoughts. Happy to provide anymore information that’s needed.

Thanks for the file, spencerokada!

If I get the idea here correctly, the following link might describe best what you are looking for.

https://help.maxon.net/#TCARIGPART-ID_CA_RIGPART_TAG_GROUP_INSERT

If you insert “under” as in “Last Child”, the movement from the Jaw is taken, but will allow for the tongue to move on its own.
In this way, the Skin Object needs the tongue “weighted” exclusively, so you gain control over it in the way you like.

To get to that field, click on your Jaw Controller in the Editor View, then show active (Character Object> Display> Manager) in the Attribute Manager.

The reduced scene I have created here (see below) shows then the Jaw_con Spline. Right sided to it is the Component- the yellow © icon.
Click on this and have a look in the Attribute Manager.

I hope that works for you. Based on the complexity you have mastered already, I guess these steps should be easy for you.

All the best

P.S.: for more in depth and first hand information, have a look at this series. I link part four here as it is the one closest to your question.

Dr. Sassi,

Usually I get notifications when my posts have been replied to but I didn’t get one for this thread. Sorry for the late reply as I’m just now seeing this, but all’s well that ends well! I’ll be implementing your advice within the next couple of days and will post an update soon.

Feel free to share the model/rig, hopefully it can be used to help more people learn a thing or two!
