Delaying “Rigid Body” behavior

Hi. I have objects under a cloner that should behave as rigid bodies, but I don’t want them to start to fall until around the 75th frame.

How can I do this? I didn’t see any way to keyframe the dynamics tag. Did I miss something?

Thanks

Edit

Found it - I could animate the Dynamics tag’s “on/off” property

Thanks for updating your own thread, Andrada. :o)
Very nice of you.
My best wishes for the project.

P.S.: If you use “Enabled” set to “off” it will be considered as no Dynamic Tag at all. The Dynamic on/Off might leave some dynamic behavior working, e.g., Collision.

Actually I have something colliding with a stack of cloned objects and when it collides I want all the dynamics to work as it scatters the items, but I don’t want the stacks to fall before being hit by the colliding object. In other words, as long as the stack is intact I want it to remain motionless, but as soon as it is hit I want the pieces to behave normally. I started out by trying to place the stacks on a colliding plane, but found that it was very hard to avoid having some slight movement in the beginning that would cause the stacks to topple and fall before the other object hit them. Basically I want something to act like the pins in a bowling alley being hit by the ball except it will eventually be a stack of cans instead of solid pins.

Roughly something like this is what I’m fooling with right now

Hi Andrada,

You need to set up the object[s], then place a Dynamic Tag to them. Set Collision to all, but the Dynamics> Trigger—“On Collision”. Perhaps try “At Velocity Peak”, and with the XPresso option the Ghost option comes into play.

Please have a look at the attached scene.

Sometimes it is a good idea, to play it for a moment (with Trigger set to “Immediately”) and set then the “Initial State”, then adjust the trigger, so part might not “hang” in the air, etc.

Let me know if there is something else. :o)

Have a great evening.

Very interesting! I set the trigger to On Collision and it worked just great for every item that was actually hit by the ball - but the “cans” that weren’t actually hit just stayed hanging in mid air - the stacks are higher than the ball so the upper cans just stayed there after the lower ones scattered.

I’
m suspecting that this will be a job for Xpresso

That could be a case for XPresso, but try the “normal dynamic” so the cans can settle and then use the “Initial State” option. In this way the cans sit “snag” and while the “neighbors” get kicked, they should have a trigger responce.

Since I do not have your scene, we move into the guess work area, which I found always not really pro like ;o) Well, an invisible object from the top, a “Collider” gently during the impact as supporting element can’t hurt and is perhaps much easier to establish than an XPresso set up ...

Would you please have this scene with the hanging cans available for me? If the upload of the zip file creates trouble, I’m happy to set up an safe upload link.

Talk to you soon

Here is your file back, Andrada, with an XPresso version. Even I think a “Plane” as collider that touches the top of the cans at a certain point is faster ;o)

Please note that Objects should not intersect while waiting for the kick.In this way I have set up the Cloner Y value to 315.

If you press play, you might see a stop during the collision, use the cache “Bake All” option and have a look again.

All the best

Thanks much

I’ll also try that idea about the plane.

You’re welcome, Andrada.

Here is an example with the “Plane”. For me, anything I do in C4D is targeting the rendering and how the result will show up. If I can create more control I’m much happier than having done all by an algorithm.

Enjoy your weekend
