Modeling Question

I have an object I’m trying to model (see attached). Because of the way it’s shaped, my gut tells me that spline modeling is the way to go, but no matter what I try (loft, extrude, etc.), I can’t get it to look like I want. I have also attached an image of the splines I’ve created. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Would this perhaps be done best with just taking a cube primitive and molding it to what I’m trying to achieve?

Hi jasonone,

One way to achieve that with a spline-based method is “sketched” in the file below:

However, I found it only useable if the amount of adjustability balances the complexity of the set up. In other words, it is most of the time to fragile for my taste.

The “box” modeling method would work, but I wouldn’t start out with a box in this case. The curve seems to be the most advanced part in the model. Start out with a small flat plane and bend it to the exact curve, then “extrude” or “extrude inner” from there. To get a more flat part is normally done by selecting the points in question and set the size in the Coordinates Panel to zero for the given axis.

As a side note, points selections and a Restriction tag can keep the Bend Deformer active as modeling tool.

Thanks Dr. Sassi. I ended up deforming a box and adding a subdivision surface and came up with what I wanted. I will, however, try out your method and see if I can get a better result, but mostly for modeling practice. I appreciate the time you spent on this. I attached a screenshot of my final result.

Looks like a winner already.

Thanks for being open to other methods, jasonone, this is certainly a winning strategy.
However, each method must fit to the project and the artist in a good balance. To find the sweet-spot among all options is certainly supported by such comparable explorations.
