Im trying to get some kind of preview to work in the preview window for the 360 camera and Dome camera in R19 but there doesn’t seem to be one.

In the video they change the camera type and have a still preview but I’m assuming that was just been pre-rendered and not live :/

Hi VJzoo,

Rick mentioned the “Interactive Render Region”, which you get form the Render Menu, or: alt/option + R

The Quality of the “Interactive Render Region” can be adjusted with the little triangle on the right side, which in return changes the render time needed.

More about that, here:

Hi Dr. Sassi

Thanks for the info I must have missed that bit.

Ill give that a go but I was hoping that it would be more like the standard preview so it was super fast rather then the render region maybe next update haha raspberry

Yup, that would be ideal, VJzoo.

I wrote and have worked about VR in the early ‘90s, and nothing was technically really possible, perhaps a “TRON” v1 aesthetic in 360x240 pixels with 12fps and 256 indexed colors, tehehe, if at all. I ‘m quite happy that we finally get this going, and it will accelerate, once the game industry pushes something, the backwind will be palpable in other industries. It has worked in the past decade nicely, so why not again.

Enjoy your weekend.

I work at a planetarium and was excited to see that c4d now has a dome camera,
but when latitude is set to zero to create a hemisphere, the z-axis of the camera
is pointed at the “equator” of the dome rather than the pole, making it impossible
to create a dome master image
(like this: 512-full-dome.jpg ).
Is there any way to get the z axis of the dome camera to point at the pole of the hemisphere? Thanks.

Hi ddixon,

Unfortunately not in one step.

For my own photo-work, I have often used a new UV projection to get exactly what I need. According to this, I have set up a converter for you, as you asked for. Please use it in the following way:

The file below contains a scene file: “…_01.c4d” This shows how the file has to be rendered. I would always go with an OpenEXR file in 32bit float, to have the highest precision.

The resulting file, is then used in scenfile “…_11.c4d”, there into the material>Luminance channel. From there you render it out, That’s all. One single extra step, which works in the same way for animation.

Scene file:

The Pre-image has the same name as the initial file, to keep it low in size I chose a small resolution 8K for a 4K seems better, or what ever you chose. I typically work in 25K pixels wide.
The result in in 4K to really stress the point that the image used should be better in resolution.

Preview Image (result_11):

To create your own “template” or converter, here is a quick overview.

You will find more about this on my verified YouTube account. There are more tips to even adjust those, if you find any distortions in it.

I hope that supports your target. If there is any question, I’m happy to look into it.

All the best

Thank you. That is a very clever trick. We can probably write a script to automate the process.
all best,

Don Dixon

You’re very welcome, Don Dixon.

A script could be a fast way to do it, no doubts.

The most simple way is certainly, to place a copy of that initial image and rename it, so C4D takes it as the previous. For hundreds of images, that would work like an animation, all the same name, but with the frame numbers to separate them. But yes, a good script is better.

If you need more options to fine-tune this, please let me know, like in the little planet YouTube clip, this could be done with more parts of the mesh.

My best wishes for the project.

Just what I´m looking for.

@DDixon: Would you share your script?

Greetings from the Planetarium Hamburg,
Sascha
