hair generated geometry doesn’t stick to child mesh object

Hello, I have attached hair to a specific point on a mesh. The mesh is a child of a parent null which has animation. I would like to generate geometry from the hair. I have a problem where the hair doesn’t stay attached to the moving geometry if the generate type is enabled.

attached is my test file.

white = mesh + animated parent null. - the hair moves with the mesh
red = mesh + animated parent null with hair set to generate type flat. - the hair does not move with the mesh
green = animated mesh with hair set to generate type flat - the hair moves with the mesh

this file is a simple test of what i am doing in a larger animation. I need to keep the animation on the null, not the child object.
Is there a way to get the hair with generated geo to move with the mesh?
A possible solution I thought could be to point cache the child mesh, however i tried this and it doesn’t bake the movement of the parent null.

Hi picturedrift,

There is no scene file. I will send you an upload link to your PM-box. (Cineversity)

Talk to you soon.

actually i think i found a solution.
duplicate the mesh
remove from the parent null hierarchy
add expresso tag to duplicated mesh
connect global matrix of duplicate mesh to original mesh (the one that is a child of the null
timeline - bake
then connect the hair to this object

it is not ideal but at least the generated hair geometry follows the mesh

No idea how your scene was set up, so that can mean many things.

Crossing messages. Thanks for the file, picturedrift.

Here is your file back. I deleted the hair Object, and created a new one. Have a look if that works for you now.

Hi, i had a look at the file, when you set the hair / generate / type to any setting apart from none, the hair still doesn’t move with the child object

Hi picturedrift,

Yes, very weird. I have no idea how to make this work. It feels a little bit like a local/global position problem, but that is just a small hunch. Which I have already proven wrong with the file below. So, perhaps in the morning with fresh eyes I might have a better idea.

What I got to work is multiple points and polygons as selection, with the rig you have had set up. Null>Animated Null>Object.

Scene file:

Perhaps, if your workaround is not to your liking, please contact the support:

Sorry, that I have not more usable information for you. Well, except this workaround, based on the findings of the file above.
So, I beveled the point of the Platonic object. In this way, there were five points (instead of one points) to work with. Which resulted five guides. This seems weird, but the Tab>Hairs can be then set to “one” only.
The rig is the same set up: Top Null>Animated Null>Object.

Perhaps that works for the project.

All the best
