Looking for tutorial on animating incisions (for medical animation)

Hi,

Apologies if this is not the right forum for this. I just got my commercial license for Cinema 4D and almost immediately received a potential freelance job offer, and of course there’s a short turnaround time. I’m trying to figure out if I have the skills to pull it off and the toughest part is that I may need to show a surgical instrument making an incision. I’ve figured out how to model an open incision, close it using a pose morph and then use a morph deformer to make it look like the incision is opening or closing. Of course, the problem is that in its “closed” state, it isn’t seamless, i.e. it doesn’t look like unbroken skin. Not sure if this is something that will be called for in the animation, but I want to be ready in case it is. Any suggestions? I suppose another option would be to use an animated Boolean object to “cut” an opening, but then there is the problem of the interior texture of the incision, which will be the texture of the cutting object and will animate with that object, instead of being “glued” to the surface that is being cut away.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark,

Certainly the right forum, as the tutorial forum should be accessed from the tutorial itself with the “Help with this tutorial” button, to keep things organized.
At the moment no tutorial comes to mind, sorry.

There are certainly many ways to do that. Weight deformers, or Deformers with falloff, PoseMorph as you mentioned, Correction Deformer, etc.

The main idea could be as well to have a model cut and one uncut. In this way the uncut model can be treaded in many ways, without giving the cut away. How to do that is also possible in many ways.

Attached below is just one option.

Perhaps it will serve only as base for further questions. If you have more info, e.g., a storyboard sketch, or something else, let me know. I’m happy to look into it.

All the best

P.S.: Here are two scenes which explore the use of an Target Effector (set to Repel) to simulate the moment the knife cuts, but the opens only where the knife is.

The file _11 is a simple version of that idea and file _21 has even the option to build up around a spline, for more a complex cut-path.

I left the Loft object as it is, but in the moment you have your shape, an edit object has options to set the UV(W) information according to your needs.

Here is the file, already animated, press play if it doesn’t run already:

Select both Target objects (they are set to Deform Points) and adjust in the Attribute Manager>Effector the two Distance parameter.

Note the Offset in the Constrains, as well as the Tangent option in the Align to Spline.

All the best

Thank you very much. The client decided to go with a 2D animation, so unfortunately I have to use Illustrator + After Effects, but your help is much appreciated.
