Getting Started with CINEMA 4D, Part 08: Introduction to Splines and Spline Generators

In Getting Started with Cinema 4D Part 8 we are to use the Bezier Spline Tool. Being a beginner I’m probably mistaken; however, in my newly purchased R18 version I don’t think I have the Bezier Spline Tool.  Actually all my 4 Spline Tools are not the same as those in the video which, I believe, is R15 version.
Again, a beginner and likely lost and confused, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Further research in the Help section I discovered:
“The Spline Pen, which you can access without having to switch to Use Point mode (it also works in the normal Use Model mode), replaces the previous versions of the Bézier, B-Spline, Linear and Akima Spline tools. The Spline Pen is equipped with a wide range of new functions.”

Thus, we are to use the Spline Pen.  Beginner error, likely not the last!

Thank you RR456, for updating your thread.

Yes, as usual, some changes/improvements will happen. Sorry about the extra work you had based on it. Certainly not your mistake/error. But I hope your question will help others.

Here is a little image to illustrate the before and now.

Thanks Dr. Sassi for your reply and the image pointing out the Spline Tool differences in the 2 versions.  I apologize for taking your very valuable time.

I recalled Patrick noting in the tutorial to right click on an item in order to access Help for that item.  In doing that move it took me right to the discussion about the version changes in the Spline Tool interface.

Again, thank you for your reply and assistance.

No time wasted on my side, RR456, again: Thanks for your question.

The forum is a place to not only ask questions, but also find answers. Your question might help to solve other peoples’ question quickly. Hence why I made this little image.

Yes, the help option is great and easy to use. I didn’t mention it, perhaps I should have, but if the icon has changed so much, it was not really intuitive to click on it, IMHO. Anyway, thanks for pointing it out.

Please always ask, nothing is more harmful during learning than an un-answered question. I compare it always to a little black hole, it slows down future learning. Worse, this “vacuum” might be filled with the wrong inforamtion, as in: assumption.

Enjoy the course and have fun.

Dr. Sassi I don’t mean to be a pest; however, I did not readily know who else to visit with on this matter.

Patrick, in Part 13 at 2:25, mentions use of the Cubic Spline drawing tool.  As you are aware, R18 does not provide said tool.  Moreover, the Help section for the Spline Pen does not, I believe, refer to the Cubic Spline drawing tool.  As noted above in this thread that section states:
“The Spline Pen, which you can access without having to switch to Use Point mode (it also works in the normal Use Model mode), replaces the previous versions of the Bézier, B-Spline, Linear and Akima Spline tools. The Spline Pen is equipped with a wide range of new functions.”

I did find discussion with regard to the Cubic Spline drawing tool in this video: https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/new_in_release_17_quickstart_spline_tools_for_drawing_sketching_smoothing by seeing the drop down at 2:30 wherein the Spline Pen listed Cubic.

As a beginner, it would seem to be more efficient if the Help section could also list Cubic in the first sentence cited above along with the other replaced tools.

Should I have missed something, I apologize in advance for taking your valuable time.

Hi RR456,

The illustration above, in post #2 shows that the previous tools were merged into the Pen. All options are given as before and more.

The limitation is perhaps that the Pen Tool is now one icon and if a different Spline Type is needed, one has to select this. So, two clicks instead of one as in earlier versions, if the initial Type wasn’t in the Attribute Manager.

To get there, if the Attribute managers shows up, one need to activated the Spline Object (which appears and should be active after the first click).

I have created a one minute clip to show-case this. In hope that allows you to enjoy the course from Patrick as well as from Donovan.

Please never hesitate to ask when you have a question. I hope that my contribution here shows you that I do not identify it as “being a pest”, not at all.

All the best

You’re welcome, RR456!

The video is up, it is short and has no audio, I assume we are visual people here, so my hope is always that these 60seconds can support the questions. grin

Let me know if there is anything else. I’m happy to look into it.

Enjoy your weekend
