Feather and bone

I have a feather configuration with a mospline and hair object. I’m using two different textures one for the bone and one for the feather. the setup works exactly as I need it to in R14. It shows the bone and the feather at the same time. However, when I open it in R18 (the version the render farm is utilizing) it shows the feather color/texture but not the bone. But if you turn off the feather object, it shows the bone.

How can I get both to show at the same time in R18?

Hi ryanc,

Please have a look here:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/MseEdlFI4yZBja8kTTn7BadhlrZnS0ZddNUjKlvDJ70?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

The clip shows two versions that could be your solution. There is also shortly a switch in the “Generator>Type” but I assume, that looks not as you would like to have it.The size would be adjusted within the Material “Thickness” then.

To make it work as you like, the alternative could be an copy of the Hair Object, as the “Rachis (Shaft)” [or bone] doesn’t show. As second option one could take the Hair Object away from the Feather set up, and while active, call up an Instance Object and place this new Instance underneath the Feather. In both ways the Hair Material for the Rachis will work as shown in the little clip. I assume that the visual part are the key, so please compare the results. The options in the Render Settings have changed since and R18 doesn’t have some of the options anymore. See image:

If you have any doubts, please ask the Render service for a test render, or check with the Support:

About the “regular” set up: a Sweep based set up is suggested:

Please check out bullet point #5

I hope that helps a little bit to get what you need for your project

My best wishes

Excellent thank you. Actually the generator-type seems to work just fine! That way I can be sure the physics move together. Appreciate it!

Another, separate question; is there a way to “Freeze” the turbulence in the gradient thats in the color channel of the hair? Because during animation it swirls around and I just want it to be static. Any suggestions?

Yes, the “Frequency” is set to 30 in the shader, set it to zero and check if that is the result you like.

Cheers
