MoGraph: Animating an individual clone

Hey all, so I’ve got some bullets set in a cloner and are cloned along a spline. I animated the offset, so as they move up, the top ones disappear. I would like to actually pull the top bullet out of the cloner and animate it moving into the barrel. Then I would like to animate the bullet tip moving through the barrel. I tried an Inheritance Effector with a MoGraph selection tag, but when animating the offset of the bullets moving up, even the bullet with the new inheritance disappears. But even if the bullet didn’t disappear, I wouldn’t know how to animate just the tip of the bullet, without affecting the rest of the clones (obviously, I wouldn’t want their tips moving out as well). Anyway, I’ve attached a couple of files to help illustrate what I’m trying to do. If there needs to be more clarification, please let me know.

Thanks!!

Hi mattrittman,

This is certainly a question with several possible answers.

I will use the names/definitions of the object in question that I have found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet

The main three options that come to mind are:

a)
Use the MoGraph Selection to select the cartridge on the final position and with this information determine the selection (XPresso). This helps to use Effectors just for the cartridge in question, or set it invisible at that time and replace it with a animation. There are options to delay a position recognition and an action.
b)
A similar set up, but the cartridge is split, e.g. the case [and its parts] and the bullet itself. Which means: set up twice the MoGraph Cloner, to be able to access each individually.
c)
The use of an animated cartridge, as in Cloner object—“Blend”, and use the top position to trigger the Effector> modify Clone option with a falloff. To keep the elements after use apart: MoGraph selection again.

As mentioned there are more options and even the Step Effector comes to mind, with a predefined Animation.
This is all just brainstorming. Is there anything that feels like an option to you and interest to dive into one of those? Let me know.

The simplest option I can think of:

Alternative: I would just load the Cartridges as in your magazine and progress it inside, as shown with the spring. In the moment it enters the final position, scale it down to -1 with a Plain Effector or make it invisible.

Then take two Particle Emitter and have one trow out the case and one the bullet. This allows you to have influence on the cases, via Wind [Turbulence] and Dynamics, and the bullets itself can have Dynamics with a different set up. To me that split allows for the most control.

Wow thank you so much for the quick reply Dr. Sassi. This is very much appreciated. I should be able to figure it out with the information you provided. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. Thanks again!

Hi Matt,

Sounds good. Please let me know if there is any question, I will look into it.
On detail would be important to know, if there is a follow-up question, do you show it in “real-time” or “slow-mo”.

Have a great and productive weekend!

Yeah these files you provided should be quite helpful! I wasn’t expecting anyone to provide files, so this definitely helps. The animation each bullet will have is a little sophisticated, but this should point me in the right direction smile

Matt,

While separating the loading/magazine, case and bullet part, you might check out anything Thinking Particles for the Bullet move, if there is a need for more “expression”.

Anyway, let me know, I’m happy to look into it…

Cheers
