continuation of weave pattern

Okay so i have received help for close up shots and i figured out what to do with the really far away shots. now I am seeking help once more! I was looking through the internet for inspiration and found the flynit spot. Found the artist on instagram and asked him how he made this certain piece. He gave an answer but still had me stumped and was hoping someone could understand a little more. He said he used a fractured voronoi sphere. where the edges were used as a base for a cloner for the weave pattern splines would be. then the strands were traced thinking particles. anyone have any ideas. I guess the couple things I have tried didn’t work. any help would be much appreciated, or heading me in the right tracks.

Hi Kotten_3,

Here is a file {more a sketch] that contains some hints, based on the source you have provided:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/v0KKRHqDhBXiFNFeg8LX4zVkToxvyGb1Xlq4bbj1WE0?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

A screen - shot with some Subdivision Surfaces added
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/KEOcpl9y0aMHnYxNWmZ6EEWvtMGU77ZZeqFD9mCGTOR?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

A short run down:

The sphere goes into a Voronoi Fracture. Set the Selection inside of the Voronoi Slection to surface Break Edges.
While active, use the object Manager> Object> Current State to Object.
Select all new polygon objects and use the Object Manager> Object> Connect Objects + Delete
Go in edge mode while the new object is selected, and double click on the Edge Selection Tag.
While the edges are selected Main Menu> Mesh> Commands> Edge To Spline.
With the Spline Active, go into point mode. Select the Points you don’t like to have.
Delete those points.
Create a copy and select all points that should have these “extensions”—press the U then I key and delete the “other points.
Set up the XPresso for Thinking Particles and the Storm Emitter. (Ask - if the there is a question.)
Check the settings of the TP Storm and the animated parameter.
Drag the TP Particle Group into a Tracer.
Play one time from start to finish. Current State to Object for the Tracer.
To place the two resulting Splines into a Sweep Object as found in the file.
Make anything else invisible.
Done.

All the best

P.S.: to use the Voronoi Fracture as object in a Cloner, set it to edge, and scale it to accordingly, here I would prefer the Sweep option to be honest.

Wow! That is what I am after! I was a little off. I couldn’t get the splines aligning with the fractured outlines! I am just glad you know so much about C4D! I will take a crack at this later today and show my results! THanks so much! By the way, I have been wanting to learn Thinking Particles, do you know of any good tutorials that could get me in the right direction? I found a couple but they are basic, I can do the basic. I would like more advanced to learn some more complex designs.

Thanks for the nice feedback,  Kotten_3!

I wanted to share these for the spline creation:

https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/sweeping_voronoi_fracture_intersections
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/model_smooth_branching_structures_with_voronoi_fracture_and_metaballs

Learning Thinking Particles…
When you have the basics down, you have most of it. I know you want something else. I know that the basics are often underestimated and the idea exists that the “hard core stuff” must be something else. Based on the questions I have gotten here over the past decade+, most questions are just based on missing basics.
So, what to do next, wait for the one who shares tips and tricks? wink That would guide you for some show-off-material, but your Thinking in XPresso and Thinking Particles wouldn’t be really pushed.

In a nut shell, it is all about information flow, and how to manage it. My tip, explore each Node, every single one. Perhaps take every day one. Check the input and output options and what is provided in the Attribute Manager.
I assume that you can explain to someone else what the Matrix is, and how a Global to Local Matrix differs, how a Vector differs to a real or integer value, etc.

In the moment you explore XPresso and Thinking Particles on that Node and “format [Vector, etc] level, you might find that most set ups are just based on it.

Each node is a building block. The better you know them [all!] the more you start to think and see solutions and options.

After a while you might explore the Formula node and other options, e.g. MoGraph, to connect things.

Each tool might be interesting and nice in Cinema 4D, but the real power and magic starts when you combine all of that. YES, there will be a lot of dead end roads while exploring it. But each experience what doesn’t work, will accelerate anything later. In the moment you combine you use the basics but you go beyond that in that very moment. Try it, if you see a complex set up, you might find out, that it is normally easy to break it down to basic packages.

If something isn’t clear, ask. I think some of the most advanced artists I have seen, e.g., during Cineversity Presentations tell, it is all in the manual. Those are the people who dig deep into the given information.
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/siggraph_rewind_2012_hackeyesup_inc_-_casey_hupke
or
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/siggraph_2015_rewind_sekani_solomon_cheating_dynamics_with_mograph

However, real hard core solutions are certainly possible when you mix Thinking Particles with Python.

Please note that I certainly know that everyone learns in a different way, and also each and everyone has a different target, vision and taste. So, what ever I say here, is just one perspective to the whole thing. grin

Enjoy

P.S.: There is always the option to request tutorials!

Those are amazing tutorials! I totally understand about the TP. I will start plugging away at it tonight!

Two things. Here is an image of my example of your walkthrough. I decided to use hair. Just thought it would look better to me. I also added a formula to the spline to make it wave. I would like it to build from the heavy end to where the strands should connect. I am having trouble with my TP system. It is staying locked into a position on the spline and emits to where i set the null. not sure if I am doing that part correct or not!

Also one last thing as a thought. Is there a way to start at the very top of the spline and have TP cover the spline building the weave just with TP filling the spline from top to bottom? If so how would I even begin something like that?

Hi Kotten_3,

I don’t know this file type, I won’t open it. Sorry, but C4D only, this looks not healthy to me. More like virus file, no way wink

Perhaps the clip (one minute) helps, download it for better viewing experience. It sets up a 12 point surface and an iteration for the Storm Emitter, including the Follow particle/Tracer
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/nou8BjfrBBJPWN0VohIVMjES4IbiSHyefJKs5FcFGsh?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

Since you said you are familiar with the basics, let’s go from there.

Look for the information flow. (Priority/Hierarchy as well.) Why should something change? There is always a reason for that. Is the information received?
If you get stuck, go back to the last time it worked, then one step back again. IF that is the point of certainty, ask yourself, what is it that I want/need? Say it! Write it down. Now ask yourself, what options are there to provide the needed process, information, actions. This should be always accompanied with save often, save incremental. So nothing is really lost. A typical starter mistake is to start with complex scenes and hope it will work. It takes longer and is mostly a mess that way.

If this doesn’t work, open a new file, and set up the simplest scene possible to create that situation. All steps before should be solved. If that works, go back to the scene you have and inspect it with the new knowledge. If not, the simplified scene can be used for a question here. (I get often scenes packed with 3rd party stuff and plug-ins. Not my pleasure, and not very helpful. So, really simplified, as this often helps to answer things already.)

Why use at this point Thinking Particles. This isn’t clear to me.
Have a look at the two files here:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/ekUShP7CuRTugVHa4RNpCcDALvCwdJjDaXXoeU1US9C?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

Perhaps you find something that can build up on this.

ENJOY

Sorry don’t know what happened to the file here. The reason I was thinking about using thinking particles on the splines was to build from nothing at the top down to an almost complete shape. Using the six or seven tracing lines like they are building up the fabric. so basically the tracer lines will go to where the spline starts and follows the particles down to the end until completed. Kind of like the example for xparticles.

https://vimeo.com/195297352

I just thought that would give that much more realism. I have been learning a lot about TP as the day goes on, but man its tough stuff. not only do i like the look of the x-particles one, I think it will be great learning all of the information on how to do it.

I do know that one of the generators can follow an alpha map i just cant figure how to place the particles on the spline itself. Also as I was practicing I came up with some xpresso for attaching a single particle to a spline point. I was trying to make each of the six points with different particle groups and I feel like my nodes are way to long. I feel like there is a way to shorten what I made. When you get some free time could you look at it and let me know if there is a shorter way for this?

Hi Kotten_3,

Have a look at the file and see how little set up is in the XPresso.

File:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/1gTJKG93u85H34CJiOF3vvnKpSFVrr5Stl1GZQR4JOb?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

Change the Speed in the PPosition Follow Node to your liking, as well as the Interpolation of the Tracer.

Again, it is all about Information flow. It is THE KEY!

All the best

Haha I told you i was a newbie at this! Wow you made this so much easier and works better than mine! That gives me something to work with and build off!

What did you think of the x-particles video? is that something that could be done in thinking particles?

You’re very welcome, Kotten_3.

It’s all just basics and being fluent in it, but the resulting combination of those is the real magic. grin There is a huge pleasure to see it growing based on one’s very own doing.

I don’t have XParticles nor a budget for all these great 3rd party extensions, renders etc, so, for further information you might check the localized fora.
I watched the initial intro of the example, certainly a nice one.

All the best

agreed i don’t have money for that, thats why i am trying to figure it out with inbox TP. I know there has to be a way to shot the particles onto a spline. I will just have to figure it out!

That’s the spirit, Kotten_3!

The options in C4D are deep, and so far I can’t see that it has stopped to surprise with new combinations all over the world.

The more you explore (even if failing forward sometimes) the more you master it. Buying stuff is solving a problem and perhaps inheriting some new ones.
I think I said it over a decade ago, never replace skills and knowledge with spending. Don’t get me wrong, there are great and useful things created in this 3D world.

If all fails, take a paper and create a sketch of the minimal set up.

Another tip is of course, that in 3D we do not have to follow real world constrains, we always (IMHO) work for the final visual results. How to get there is not as important than how it works for the audience.

ENJOY

P.S.: …set the Time Effector as well to R.B. 180º and it starts already to wave a pattern.

P.S.: Since you are in explore mode, I would like to point your attention to this special set up.

Please move the “Explorer” and observe the Sphere. Could that be something that fits to your ideas?

P.S.2.: Perhaps a little bit more complete, to push your explorer spirit.

Here is a sketch. Please not that the precision of the “GetNearestPoitToSpline” node is set to 50, as the default slows down anything …!

Nice to see you are following your ideas, Kotten_3.

Keep going, exploration is the key to create your very own “Unique Selling Point”!

My best wishes.

… one more file to explore: (I would weave it normally differently, but the clip showed otherwise, so here we go)
