Best alternative for UV grid snapping in body paint

Hello!

I was doing some general layout in bodypaint when found out that it does not have a UV grid overlay for snapping(at least to my knowledge). I was wondering what the best alternatives were for grid snapping. So far I’ve come up with a few solutions.

1. Use a connect object and have a set of poly’s to snap to.
2. Use this plugin for referencing your UV’s in worldspace so that you can use Cinema’s snapping options in the ortho view(http://www.welter-4d.de/fplugs/UVtoObjectDoc/uv2object.html)
3. Use Kai’s UV image grids and eyeball it -

Is there a grid somewhere that I’m missing?

If not what are your thoughts on Unfold3d(http://www.polygonal-design.fr/e_unfold/index.php) or 3DCoat for layout -

Thanks!

Hi Tony,

Quantize would normally support such, perhaps in conjunction with Line Up UV. Typically UV snaps to each other.

If the mesh of the object was already in such a rectangular manner, then a simple projection would set this in place.
The mesh needs to be on an orthogonal projection. If the surface is not - then use a specific work-plane, “Align Workplane to Selection”. Chose a view that shows it orthogonal and then us the “Frontal” in UV Commands.

A few years ago this was suggested to me as a good tool, if it has the functionality that you are after, I’m not aware.

There are perhaps many more options, but as the one above, I haven’t used any during productions, so I can only repeat what I heard or read about. Which is not my favorable thing to do, as I don’t know it first hand.

The snapping Quantize comes to mind, but the underlaying quantize idea is based on % and not on a grid.
Perhaps you can tell me what your target is.

Eventually you could just add a grid (e.g., a Plane) to your object, as in Merge/Connect, and use this for the time being. If all is set and done, delete that extra grid. Yes, that is more of a hack, but perhaps all you need.

Besides that, you can always write a line to MAXON>Suggestions:

Thanks Sassi:

I want functionality similar to this multigrid in Unfold3d(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEO5UlOu21Y)

Basically just a grid where you can define the amount of lines i.e. 10x10 grid etc - Maya has this function and headus does as well

I’ll submit that maxon but I’ll give the connect object a go, that could let me authro UV’s independently possibly which would be nice

Hi Tony,

It sounds like a pretty natural feature, which made me search twice if I missed it so far. grin

Thanks for the extra work, because the artist’s suggestions form is a very important part of MAXON’s development culture.

I’m certain that it will be read with great attention, thanks a lot. Perhaps someone else adds his/her voice to make it happen!

All the best
