How to set up Cineware 3.1.22 (AE 16.1.2) with C4D Broadcast R20?

I’ve got an AE project that I originally created with C4D Lite. It was working well, but I started to hit some walls in the Lite version, so I decided to point CINEWARE at my C4D Broadcast R20 installation, but I’ve been completely unable to get it to work. I get no render in AE and I get frequent complaints about connection errors.

It’s not completely broken: once I beat on it long enough to make the connection errors go away, then enable Live Link, changes to the timeline’s playback position does sync the play head in both apps. But, still no render in AE. The project *does* render properly in C4D Broadcast R20.

I’ve looked at the C4D docs for this feature, and I don’t see an example of how to set this up. (Everything I’ve found assumes you’re using C4D Lite.)

Since I can’t believe this feature simply doesn’t work any more, I’m guessing I’ve just configured something wrong, but it’s not at all clear to me what. Therefore, I’ll just post all of my configuration screens and the resulting error dialogs with the hope that someone can tell me where I screwed up.

First, here’s the CINEWARE Options dialog:

As you can see from the path names, I’m on macOS.

I suspect these two paths shouldn’t be the same, and that the Render path needs to change…but to what?

I’ve made a corresponding change to the Live Link port number and enabled the option in the R20 prefs:

Here’s the layer stack-up in the AE project, showing that the C4D layer is on top of everything else, so it’s not like it’s just being hidden. Also, keep in mind that this same project used to work with C4D Lite, and it works again if I reset the CINEWARE settings to go back to C4D Lite.)

This is the first connection error from AE after switching the CINEWARE settings and restarting AE:

This is the second message I get, immediately after okaying the first:

If I completely misconfigure things, I can get this one in an endless loop, requiring that I Force Quit the app:

I also tried pointing CINEWARE at my old R19 installation, hoping that this was just an R20 incompatibility, since AE CC still ships with R19 Lite, but no, it fails, too.

Hi tangent,

Of course, I hadn’t updated since a while and did just now to see what you experience and if I can reproduce it. Yes, something is not right.
Sorry that you have such trouble. This forum is not a technical support forum, as I’m not supposed to do technical support here.
The Maxon Support is the place to go, as any trouble that might come up should be communicated at the right place. Any solve elsewhere doesn’t lead to a general solution.

Fingers crossed that this is quickly solved.

Cheers

Thanks, tangent, that is always appreciated.

I have to downgrade Ae now. Edit: Works again, after downgrading/edit

Have a great weekend
