Here is an example, with exaggerated values, just to showcase the effect:

Please note that the Grow and Average parameter is based on distance. Those maps are the base to change the hight of the points; The point distance changes, and with this the calculation of the Vertex-map. If you take a more extreme value here, the feedback-loop disables the effect. But by disabling it, it changes, which results in a huge mess. Please have an eye on the Vertex Map> Layer> Use Deformed Points. I have that checked off for the Average part.

Another gotcha might be the Value Clamping inside the Displacer> Falloff.
