Hair Intersecting With Ear Geometry

Hi Doc.  I’m back for another “Adventure in Cinema 4D Education.”

I’ve added hair to a boy character and (in the context of the hairstyle that like) I’m really struggling to get the hair not to intersect with the boy’s ears.  I’ve added a Hair Collider tag to the boy’s body geometry.  I’ve used a head density map to control the regions that the hair grows from.  I’ve used all manner of hair tool to trim, lengthen, remove, and brush the guides that I believe are causing the problem.  I’ve even tried using dynamics to move the hair, but nothing seems to be getting the job completely done.  My biggest struggle is that I can’t seem to determine exactly which guide or combination of guides is responsible for the intersection.

Is there a way to fix this, and is there a better way to determine which guide (or guides) is the culprit?

It’s okay to share screen captures of this model, but I’d rather not share the model itself.

Awaiting your permission to upload.

Thanks, Doc!

Hi Mark,

I haven’t closed the last upload link nor any idea about the “boy” character.

… talk to you soon. In the moment I have something.

Thanks, Mark, for the file.

Think of the Guides as the Key poses for the Hair, and between those the Hair itself will be interpolated. Two guides close to the ear, nicely away from it, and then the Hair goes right through the ear. I fixed the right ear.

The simple way is to find the two (perhaps more) Guides and move and/or scale them. Render and check again. This is in the file I have send back

If you need total control, then use the Simulation> Hair Edit> Hair to Guides, and that will present you with a guide for each Hair. Total control. Not really advised for many reasons.

Other options might be in other manual manipulations. As shown in the screen capture below

I hope that helps.

Cheers

Thanks for your help, Doc.  On my wish list is a way for the user to tell the hair to avoid intersecting with designated parts of the geometry at all costs (perhaps designated via a selection tag or something like this).  Until then, I’ll just keep scaling, moving, cutting away.  smile

You’re very welcome, Mark.

I have updated the post above with a link.

Wishlists and other suggestions need to go here to be heard first ear (hand)!

However, since Hair-styles are certainly a creative field, I guess there will be always some work to be manual. On the end, it is as usual a question where the developers put their time, and on the other end, how much computing power is used to avoid a few clicks.

Cheers
