Rotating objects [around two points]

Hello,

Now that I have been learning C4D and creating shapes I have some question on manipulating objects. I have Googled and looked at Youtube videos but cannot find anything specific.

When you add the Isohedron platonic, it appears to be on its side. I want the shape to be upright similar to the attached scene. However I found myself tweaking and fine tuning the rotation a lot. What is the recommended way to perform the following steps:

1. Set Isohedron platonic so it is perfectly upright like the attached scene.
2. Rotate the shape 180 degrees so it spins on its Y axis. When I tried this initially, because the shape was not perfectly upright, you could see a slight wiggle as the top and bottom points of the platonic were not directly aligned. So when the shape completed its 180 degree turn you could see it jump back to the start. Does that makes sense?

The reason to spin the shape 180 degrees is that I can loop this so it appears like it spins 360 degrees.

Also, while I am here, some quick camera questions smile

1. Is there a way to move the world center to the center of a selected object?
2. If you have an active camera view enabled. Can you copy this to the view port camera? So that when you click the icon that disables the active camera in the object manager, the view stays the same in the view port (default camera)?

Sorry for the multiple questions but I want to ask them while they’re fresh in my head smile

Thank you,
David

Hi David,

The question might be more precisely: how to line up two points of an object, so each point is exactly on the Y axis?
Please have a look at the screen capture. You can download it and with that, you have a better viewing experience, i.e., start and stop.

Whatever you feel is the top and bottom point is perhaps different to what an application might think (speaking about the center of an object) … Hence why I tried to share a method that works on more objects, as shown.
What you need to explore is the Axis Center, as in this tutorial:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/axis_center

For Primitives (non-polygonal objects) you might needs a Null Object as parent to have a clean Y axis, to have a “head” spin.
Have a look here:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/UiwsPaGobEJ4f0p4IDmBVpdBlZa2V1djaoqkPq2hjbP

Which might answer already the first question of the second part. But no, the world center is fixed.  What you can do is to work with Workplanes, they can be set to nearly anything.
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/the_workplane

If you have a camera view, and you call up a new camera, you should get a duplicate of that currently active camera. Other wise check out the Main Menu> Tools> Arrange Objects> Transfer. However that will only transfer PSR, all camera specific data, will be left on default. Why not just copy the camera in question?

As usual, please let me know if there are other questions, and don’t hesitate to open more threads at once. Think of anyone who has to search the forum and how “noisy” mixed threads can be. Thanks for considering.

All the best

You’re knowledge of this product is exemplary and as usual your replies are so detailed and clear. You are really helping me in thinking about objects rather than what you see. Thank you again!

For your information I am interested in sacred geometry hence my focus on the platonic solids and patterns in general. I am also interested in the Flower of Life and Seed of Life patterns so if you happen to know any videos or links that re-create these, please share.

And yes, I will open more threads to avoid mixed threads. I just didn’t want to give the impression of hijacking the forum smile

Best,
David

You’re very welcome, David, thanks for taking the time.

The Flower Of Life, certainly something that I drew a lot with my fathers circle/compass set, sneaking into his office when I was very young. Which lead certainly to go through the three years of learning to be a construction draftsmen, with my first house designed and build at the age of 16 (build means, three month on location moving stones, etc, and lead). Just so you get an idea of my earliest exploration of geometry.

In that way, it is just pure fun to share a file with you, which I think has some value to explore. I made it for you and I hope it resembles the one you had in mind. If not, store in a folder for later grin and find an sketch what you are after. So, I can share some thoughts if you like.

Scene file

Open it and render.

The base for it is just a Polygon set to triangle and 9 subdivision. The dimensions are just based on Pythagoras. If needed, I can set this in XPresso. The spheres are then scaled to the edges. I deformed them a little bit, but that is perhaps nit picking.

ENJOY

Well there you are, fascinating how a forum on 3D modelling and animation software ends up with a slight diversion to a common interest of the Flower of Life smile

I look forward to opening your scene file when I get home from work to see what awaits. Thanks for your time again!

Hi Sassi - I forgot to reply since you posted the flower of life design. Thank you so much for sharing and very interesting to see how the flower of life is contained in the triangle polygon. I’m sure Pythagoras would be very impressed with this smile

Thanks a lot, David, you’re very welcome.

I found several images for this, but this has some nice qualities. If you are looking for any other option, please let me know.

Enjoy your evening
