Issue with Bevel Tool

Hi,
I’m relatively new to this community, and I hope I posted my question in the right place. I’m working with Cinema4D R18 and I would say my overall knowledge is good. However, I have problems with rounding some corners, and I can’t work it out what I am doing wrong.

I have attached two screenshots. I am trying to round the corners of the inner triangles. When I select the edges of the holes and use the bevel tool, I get strange results. I have played around with all settings, but none of gave me the result I was hoping for.

I hope someone can help me.

Hi dnvie,

Please have a look here:

The core idea is here to work with N-Gons, as it is a good idea during modeling. Of course if you have switched on N-Gon lines it might look a little bit more crowded. On the end the model should have no N-Gons, but that is a discussion on its own.

I hope the tips and tricks can help you here.

As a side note: Other than that, the intermediate points (if your objects were spline based and the caps will determine how dense your meshes are, the more dens, the more likely the problems will occur. I can’t spot that in the image, but I thought it was mentioning.

If that is the model with the problems, perhaps start with a pure spline based profile and extrude this. You might have the shape and the edges already nicely done with one step. THe only obstacle would be different bevel sizes then.

All the best

P.S.:

Here are some example of how this object could be done quickly.

Thanks, that was helpful. How would you round the additional yellow edge?

You’re welcome, dnvie.

As I mention it here and there, modeling is like chess playing, always have the next few steps in mind.

I would start by Chamfer the Splines. In the moment the Cogwheel-Inlays fit the target, try to find a good setting for the intermediate points, then (Object-Manager> Objects> Current State To Object) from there, we have two options, one native and the other one with a Cineversity Plug-In.

With the Object in your image above, you can bevel this line first, but then the I-Selection from the Boole is useless as the geometry is not the same anymore. (Except you bevel it before the Boole gets to work. See below!) A new selection needs to be created. I would go that path only if the way with Splines can’t be done, or what ever speaks against it, as the adjustments later on are way more difficult. The splines can be copied and replaced without jeopardizing the Bool set up. Certainly a time saver down the road.

I had so far no luck combining two Bevel Deformers while using the Angle Threshold for this specific set up.

So, going back several steps in the Boole, as I suggested in the chess analogy, I used finally three Bevel Deformer, to get this done, and keep it to a certain degree adjustable.
