Mirroring off Axis

Hi there!

I have been playing around with the Mirror Tool to get a feel for it. I have a flat pieces of geometry that has a diagonal on one side. I am trying to mirror along that diagonal edge, which is off x,y,z axis. I’ve also tried the align work plane to selection for that edge. I’m likely doing something wrong here and would love a little help if possible.

I tried uploading my model 2x but for some reason, neither firefox nor chrome browsers are allowing me to do this. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you,

Fauntial

Hi Fauntail,

No file, as you mentioned it, did you “zip” it?
Please check your Private Message here on Cineversity. I have send you an upload link.

I will have a look into it.

Hi Dr. Sassi,

Yep, you were right. You’re always right. Impressive, haha! smile

I double checked file size before trying to attach without zip and the file size with much smaller than the max limit. Anyhow, from now on I will only use zips from now on.

Geronimo!

Thanks for the file, Fauntail.

You wrote a flat piece of geometry. The file contains a Cylinder like shape based on an Arrray from a curved object.
I see a row of selected points in a curved order.

The Mirror Tool (is that your tool for this?), while in point mode, will only mirror points, nothing else (no edges and with that no polygons).

What do I miss?

Hi Dr. Sassi,

that doesn’t seem right. I apologize for any inconvenience I may be causing. So I’m sending again.

File should have:

(1) Null
(1) Guide- indicating axis where would like to mirror
(1) Polygon: flat shape, no curvature.

Yes, Fauntail, that makes more sense. Thanks.

Please have a look here: (Screen capture, one minute)

The Workplane can be set based on selections of the object. Two points or an edge will not give a 3D stable orientation, a reason why I think there is no option to do it directly.
Honestly, I do not use this function a lot, if at all, so I’m not certain if there is a direct way to mirror along a selected edge (or point-pair).

Let me know if that works for you, and thanks for putting your name on the file, one step less to do, thanks.

Cheers

Hi Dr. Sassi,

thank you so much again for your putting together a short video for me. That really explained it well and helped alot. Also, from now on, I’ll be sure to label my files for you convenience with my name on it, even though you did not ask me to. I am just very grateful for your help, so doing that is the least I can do.

Thanks and have a great day!

Very nice of you, Fauntail. Yes I love a good naming convention, otherwise I would have uncounted (1,000+?) “test.c4d” files here wink Yes, I name some in that way, as it is an equivalent to “delete_me.c4d” for my clean up work.

My best wishes for your next exploration.
