object buffer from cloner array

Building the ubiquitous video wall.. It is set up with a cloner in a grid array, this section is 12x3x1, and I’m looking to get an object matte out of a few selected objects (screens) to port over to After Effects to insert the ever changing video clip. Getting an object matte out of C4D of only the selected object(s) is the goal. Not seeing where exactly to put the composite tag with in the close or how to set up or access the selection, or if that is the right process. I have the external composite fine. File included. on R19 broadcast, Mac on 10.13.3
Thanks much!! Jon Lewis

Hi Jon Lewis,

The file is not available.

Some wall “matte” ideas are discussed here:

Do you need an upload link?

All the best

Hey thanks for replying. Good to hear from you! Hope you are well. Thought I uploaded it but here is another link.

As I pulled this out of the actual project, remembered there is a bend deformer upstream of it.
Finding that by duplicating the cloner, adding a selection tag to the duplicate clone, inverting it, then applying a plainer effector with a zero scale, it makes only that clone instance visible and makes an object buffer. But how to make the duplicate cloner invisible so there are not two clones competing is still an issue. Also on the duplicate clone I had to remove the boolen so I could access just the plane to get a matte. So close to solving but still stuck, and not sure if this is the best way. Thanks! Jon Lewis

Here is an idea, Jon Lewis,

Please have a look at the clip, and perhaps if you like the idea, download the script here: [intro]
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/mattematic_overview
It is Rick’s genius idea to save you time for things like that.

A clip based on your file:

Note that the Selection Object cannot be created with Tags alone, so we need a dummy for its creation (the cube) which can be later on deleted.

I can share your file, but I wasn’t certain how public that file is intended to be.

All the best

Hey thanks so much for doing that!! Adding it in now. Not sure if I needed all of them, just a couple. But will work with it.  Thanks,
Jon Lewis

You might use the Take System to limit or change the amount of Buffers used, or, perhaps just a Render Setting’s “Child” can do that trick already.

You have certainly considered to use CineWare, but I had to mention it.

My best wishes for your project.

Thanks again. Had some time to really try this out. I’m having some issues with it. One, when I run the selection filter I see only one compositing tag appear in the selection object window. Somehow in yours, all of them appear. Magic?
Then, and this may be related to the first issue, nothing appears in the object buffers when rendered, they are empty. So I may be missing a step,
Thanks for your help, Jon Lewis

Hi Jon Lewis,

Please have a look at the clip and the file, I hope that will show what happens.
Scene file and clip
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/XwthkLSPALELr2jM14aRJgf7JdyIzDCLFyGCQtwWg17

In short, your Cloner Object was set to “sort”. Since you have had reduced the scene, I guess this is the missing part, no information to sort things, so the first child was repeated 36 times, hence all in Buffer 1, nothing in buffer 2-33 (34?). 36 clones, 34 child objects

The Options to select all Comp tags seems not to put the Attribute manager to work. So, selecting first one Tag of its kind does this, then RMC click to “Select all ‘Compositing’ “, as shown in the clip.

If there is anything I have missed, please let me know, I’m happy to look into it.

All the best

Cool that it works for you, thanks for the feedback, Jon!

Yes, the application is certainly deep and I’m not certain if anyone ‘really’ knows everything in it.

Cheers
