Output path “./output/$prj_$take” What’s up with this?

Hey there,

Recently I upgraded to R19 from R17 and I’ve encountered something of a conundrum a la the output paths of rendered files.

Used to be that when I rendered something, in the save menu inside ‘Edit Render Settings’, the section would say ‘File…’ and then a clear file path to the folder where the rendered frames would appear.

But now, the default lists as: ./output/$prj_$take

When I change this to a different directory, the output still winds up somewhere other than the specified location.

Anyone have any ideas as to what my be causing this?
It’s caused a bit of a nightmare with keeping track of where files wind up.?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi helloimneil,

As you mentioned, that should be the default: empty Why it is a default (with Tokens) after upgrading, I can’t tell.
A little bit more about the feature that was introduced with R17:
https://help.maxon.net/us/#54506

What the example you shared does is to name the resulting file with the variables (Tokens)

Tokens
The following Tokens can be used:
$prj: Project file name
$camera: Current camera name
$take: Current take name
$pass: Multi-Pass or object channel name (the defined multi-pass names). Primarily to be used as directory name. (the Channel Name as Suffix option will be disabled internally)
$userpass: Multi-Pass or object channel name (the multi-passes renamed via double-click in the Render Settings (opened Multi-Pass tree view). Primarily to be used as a directory name.
$frame: Current animation frame
$rs: Current Render Setting name
$res: Image resolution (e.g., 800*600: 800X600)
$range: Animation range (e.g., from frame 23 to 76; 23_76)
$fps: Frame rate

Could it be that you have a “New.c4d” file in your Maxon folder? Perhaps delete it or overwrite it with an empty name field of course.

Have you tried to delete your Preferences and restart the app?

Did you used the Take System?

If nothing helps, I would suggest the support:
https://www.maxon.net/en-us/support/how-can-we-help/

I hope one or the other option will solve it.

All the best

P.S.: if the system is at all of any interest, please have as well a look here

Hey there Dr. Sassi,

Thanks for your help! I do in fact have a new.c4d file in my Maxon folder. I haven’t used the take system, but it’s good to know that if I choose to do so in the future that that could also cause some alternate save file paths as well. I will give a try at what you suggested and see if that has any impact on this particular issue.

Again, thank you!

You’re welcome, helloimneil!

I hope it will fix it, and the new.c4d file contained the additional information.
Your comment “When I change this to a different directory, the output still winds up somewhere other than the specified location.” made me a little bit uncertain about it, as it should have only an influence in the moment a new scene is requested. Fingers crossed.

Cheers

I just did a test render after deleting the New.c4d file and… back to normal!

Thanks, Dr. Sassi! You the man.
